SIBU: SMK St Elizabeth scored an average school grade (GPS) of 2.0 in this year’s PMR, which is poorer than the 1.94 it scored in last year’s.
Despite the wane, principal Clement Chieng said he was satisfied with the school’s overall results this year.
“This is the third year that the school became top school in Sibu in the PMR examination,” he corroborated, adding that the school’s passing rate had shown an improvement.The passing rate for the school is 95.79 per cent, a slight improvement when compared to last year’s 94.29 per cent.
Out of the school’s 261 candidates, 34 obtained straight A’s, 16 got 7A’s and above, 18 students scored 6A’s and above, and 25 attained 5A’s and above.
“We had 58 straight-A candidates last year. Although there is a decrease in the number of straight-A students, I am still happy and satisfied with the results,” he reiterated.
He said the teachers and students had worked very hard.
“I was a bit worried during the trial exam as the students did not do as well as I had expected,” he added.
Meanwhile, SMK Methodist scored 2.06 in its GPS and a 87.86 per cent passing rate.
Last year, the school obtained 2.09 in GPS.
Ninety one of its students obtained straight A’s, 30 obtained 7A’s and above, 25 students got 6A’s and above, and 29 students obtained 5A’s and above.
Principal Yong Choo Tiong noted a slight drop in the number of straight-A students this year when compared to last year’s 95 students.
He said of the 412 candidates this year, two were children with special needs.
One of them, Lawrence Ha, who has hearing and eye problems, managed to score 4A’s and 4B’s.
His teacher, Tie Ing Ming, said Lawrence had always been a good student and very disciplined.
“His friends helped him a lot. He coped very well in class,” she said, adding that Ha would proceed to Form 4 in the same school.
According to Sibu Education Office, there were 272 students in Sibu district getting straight A’s this year.
Seven obtained straight 9A’s, 215 students scored straight 8A’s, while 50 attained straight 7A’s.
All the students who obtained 9A’s were from SMK Agama which scored 2.17 in GSP.
It was a slight drop compared to last year’s where there were 355 students obtaining straight As.
A total of 4,054 students sat for the exam this year compared to last year’s 4,224.
There was also a slight decrease in the overall passing rate – 74.42 per cent compared to last year’s 75.36 per cent.
The overall GPS also dropped from 2.60 last year to 2.69 this year.
SMK Tung Hua had 25 students with straight A’s, followed by SMK Sacred Heart with 24, and Rosli Dhobi with 15.
SMK Sacred Heart scored a passing rate of 83.40 per cent followed by SMK Deshon with 81.29 per cent.
SMK Lanang’s improvement in the passing rate was most obvious – from 63.95 per cent in last year’s to 73.73 this year.
