KUCHING: ‘Magic The Gathering’ players will be given the chance to prove their strategy skills in a casual tournament to be held at MTG Kuching (1st floor) in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce this Saturday (March 22) at 2pm.

Being one of the longest surviving trading card games in the world, this upcoming tournament promises to elevate the whole local ‘Magic The Gathering’ scene to another level.

“MTG Kuching would usually host casual events every Saturday to promote communal spirit among players in cards trading and deck-building lessons,” MTG Kuching spokesperson Christopher John told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said the upcoming tournament is also a platform to revive and encourage more new players to partake in the game and join their community.

The game, he said, introduces a healthy interactive hobby which deviates from computer games as players are required to communicate with each other which improves their thinking and social skills.

“The tournament will also be used to gauge and mould our local players to compete in main events at national or international level. We are also looking into the possibility of conducting training and coaching workshops for serious players,” he added.

According to him, Magic events are frequently held throughout the world with ‘Friday Night Magic’ as the signature event where players are pitted among themselves to claim lucrative magic products worth hundreds of ringgit.

Meanwhile, for this first upcoming tournament, he said players are required to bring a minimum of 60 cards and a sideboard maximum of 15 cards. The approved blocks are Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon’s Maze, Magic 2014, Theros and Born of the Gods.

Entry fee will start at RM10 and the winner will be based on tabulated points at the end of the tournament.
