KUCHING: Political stability in Sarawak will remain as long as PBB is united and solid, said party veteran Datuk Peter Minos.

Now a self-styled socio-political analyst, Minos pointed out he was certain new Chief Minister and PBB president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem, just like his predecessor Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, would ensure continued unity in PBB and in the state BN.

“A weak PBB means lots of problems for Sarawak. But with a strong PBB, there is no need for Umno to enter Sarawak.

“Also because of a firm PBB leader, outsiders cannot bring in racial and religious extremism to Sarawak. Taib did just that, and Adenan will do the same, knowing his thinking,” he said yesterday.

On the economic front, Minos said he believed Adenan would definitely follow up on the success of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), and open up rural land for development and emancipating the rural folks from rural poverty and economic depression.

He was also optimistic there would be upgrading of basic utilities and facilities, bettering tourism, and furthering urbanisation and industrialisation.

“When leading Yayasan Sarawak, Adenan did much on education, and I am sure he will do the same for Sarawak as a whole.

“Adenan will give focus on the economy because in the coming years jobs and opportunities must be created for the rising population and graduates coming out of colleges and universities.

“In our modern era, a leader stands or falls on issues related to economy. It is thus vital for Adenan to have a good and competent economic team to advise and assist him, in making proposals and taking initiatives, in following up of plans and approved projects and in monitoring and appraising all matters related to the economy.”

Minos, who was formerly PBB deputy information chief, also mentioned there were several perennial and nagging problems awaiting Adenan.

These include native customary rights (NCR) land issue, winning back Sarawak Chinese to BN and rising expectations.

“Adenan will use his legal knowledge and his sagacity in finding a right formula in seeing that rural NCR landowners and investors will arrive at a win-win situation, taking into considerations what had been decided by the courts.

“Misunderstanding on NCR land matters must not stop the development of rural land for the economic benefits of the rural people.”

As for the tendency to support opposition among the Chinese, he said there must be a way to woo them back.

“An intelligent community, the Chinese will respond to what is positively good for them, and Adenan will put his thinking cap on this.

“People nowadays have too much expectations of a leader and, at times, have all kind of perceptions of him. That is just normal and natural. Brainy Adenan will know what to do. He will not fail Sarawakians. That much I can say now because only time will tell.”
