KUCHING: Welfare, Women and Family Development minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah advised readers not to believe rumours on social media like Facebook without first checking them out with the original source.

Fatimah told reporters this at a Home Help Services Programme at Kampung Kudei Lama here yesterday.

This is because ‘news’ spread from person to person will be distorted or exaggerated, she cautioned.

Fatimah was commenting on news of a car accident victim who recently lost her arm calling for help on social media.

“The (welfare) department can give her assistance in the form of artificial limb but she has to apply first, and come for fitting to get the proper size as one size don’t fit all,” she said.

She added that those who wish to provide assistance should go ahead if it is within their means.
