KUCHING: All 31 Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) councillors will have a specific area to look after.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said they will also be required to form Residents Committees in their
areas.

“All councillors will be assigned to look after their own specific areas to better serve and listen to the grouses of the people.

“By having such structure, we can better coordinate and bring the needs of the people to the attention of the various authorities because like it or not, the council and the councillors are the front-liners,” Lo told a press conference yesterday after chairing a full council meeting.

He said MPP is still in the midst of looking at the areas to be divided among all the councillors.

Once completed, he said, the councillors would have to furnish their mobile phone numbers to the public.

Lo said he is confident with the line-up of councillors, which is representative of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The composition of MPP councillors, including the chairman, are 12 from the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (9), three each from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), as well as four from various NGOs.

“The councillors with MPP now are eager to serve and energetic, and as we can see now, we are able to work together,” Lo said, adding that there will be many improvements ahead.

On the MPP deputy chairman’s post, which is for PBB, Lo said it was up to the party to decide.

“I don’t want to speculate, but whoever is appointed is somebody who has contributed to the council,” Lo said.

The post became vacant following the death of Mohd Hashim Yap.
