KUCHING: Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar is disappointed with the attitude and negligence of some police personnel, and he wants to have a word with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The Deputy Home Minister said the recent case where a drunken policeman lost his pistol with two magazines in Satok here to individuals, who in turn used it to commit robbery, had cast a bad light on the police force.
In the incident on Jan 13, the pistol was believed to be stolen from the Lundu-based policeman who was drunk and dozing in his car.
Wan Junaidi stressed that police personnel must always remind themselves not to smear the good image of the police.
“The government and the police will not compromise on negligence and safety issues.
“The case involving the drunken police officer who lost his gun should not be taken lightly,” said Wan Junaidi when met after presenting donations to fire victims at Kampung Pulo yesterday.
Wan Junaidi said he would meet with the IGP to discuss ways to improve the discipline of police personnel in order to enhance the image of the police force.
On another matter, Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, advised the people, especially those staying in coastal areas, not to go to the sea when the weather is bad.
“Restrict your movements during rough weather. Limit your movements to the rivers. We do not want what had happened in Daro to repeat.”
The boat tragedy in Kampung Kut, Daro, happened on Saturday when a longboat ferrying a wedding entourage of 27 passengers capsized in the choppy waters of Batang Lassa.
Sixteen of the passengers were rescued by villagers, but three drowned and eight went missing.
At the event yesterday, Wan Junaidi distributed RM11,100 from the Sarawak Baitulmal Fund and RM8,500 from the Santubong Parliamentary Service Centre to the four families whose houses were completely destroyed by fire on Thursday.
