KAPIT: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has been commended for living up to its vision and mission as the energy provider for the state.

In giving words of praise to the company at its New Year Dinner cum Family Day at a hotel here on Saturday, political secretary to the chief minister Wilson Nyabong who represented Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, was glad to note that the company was aggressively embarking on green energy to power up the state and its industries.

“Previously known as Sesco, you’re given the heavy task and responsibility to overcome the challenge in meeting the state’s demand for energy,” he said at the gathering that was attended by all staff from Kapit, Song and Belaga.

He explained that for the past 50 years, the state had been depending on fossil fuel to generate power and that one day oil supply would be exhausted, making it necessary to look for alternative sources such as coal and hydro power.

He thus praised SEB for going for hydro dams to generate electricity, saying by doing so the company was also contributing to rural development in terms of roads and other infrastructure.

He also said the state was now undergoing the second wave of development through SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy), in which there would be many heavy industries that require cheap and reliable electricity supply.

“As power provider, you’ve a lot of challenges. Nevertheless, I know you’ve the solution for meeting consumers’ demand. Previously, Kapit faced frequent interruption of electricity supply. After the town was connected to the state grid a year ago, now we’ve stable electricity supply,” he added.

Commenting on the New Year Dinner cum Family Day, Nyabong commended the organising committee for doing a good job in bringing all the company’s staff and family members together to foster closer cooperation and friendship.

Later, he announced a grant of RM5,000 from Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak to the organising committee.

Among those present were district engineer Marina Sylvester, SEB public relations officer for Baleh River Cr Jantai Maseng and organising chairman Qhairul Abdullah.
