KUCHING: Workers have covered the big potholes at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho, which have been causing problems to motorists.

It is understood that Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has aksed the contractor to repair the road following public complaints after several vehicles including a lorry was stuck in one of the deep potholes Wednesday morning.

Workers from the contractor’s company were seen busy covering up the potholes to ensure smooth ride along the small yet busy road which provides access to the many businesses at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho such as auto workshops, coffeeshops, and tyre retail shops.

Several coffeeshop owners when met said they were pleased to see the contractor and their workers repairing the road since Wednesday evening.

The potholes are said to be due to digging works on the road for upgrading of water pipes by Kuching Water Board (KWB).

KWB deputy general, Moses Joseph, had told a local daily yesterday that the contractor was supposed to cover the holes earlier but it was delayed due to communication breakdown between the contractor and sub-contractor.

The incessant rain since the previous night also led to the holes getting deeper and causing more erosion, he added.

Kuching South mayor Dato James Chan, in expressing his disappointment, warned contractors not to compromise the safety of road users when installing utility equipment under the roads.

He said he would call a meeting soon with utility providers on this matter. Jalan Ang Cheng Ho is a council road.

In the Wednesday morning incident, seven vehicles were reported to be stuck in the potholes which caused a long traffic jam that affected business in the area.
