KUCHING: More opportunities are expected to be given to local artistes and musicians to perform at special events and night entertainment outlets in Sarawak this year.

Dayak Arts and Culture Enthusiasts Association vice-president Isa Lee said this was based on greater recognition accorded to local talent, especially the Dayak music fraternity which is getting booked for many shows of late.

He said it was now common to see local music talent perform at popular night outlets and official functions organised by the government and corporate sector. This is a healthy development as they are no longer limited to small village functions or fun fairs.

“The higher income enjoyed by the people enables them to organise more entertainment activities which benefit our local music talent. The public is also more appreciative of local artistes and musicians, and pay them accordingly.

“In the 1980s and 1990s, RM500 is sufficient for a popular Iban singer in a full concert, but nowadays it is common to pay RM1,000 for the singer to sing up to five songs,” he said yesterday.

He also pointed out that opening up of more opportunities also benefit the sound engineers as well as those involved in the audio-visual business as there will be increased demand for their services.

“What I can say is the local music industry in Sarawak is building up though still plagued by piracy problems. But this did not dampen our spirit as we continue to compose more songs, release more albums, and get offers to perform at shows, concerts and functions,” he said.

On another matter, Isa announced that he has set up his own one-piece band called Simple Play exclusively for small events such as birthday parties, farewells, weddings, reunion dinners, church functions and house blessing.

A music veteran of 30 years more known as a band leader and bassist, Isa said the band was formed to provide live entertainment for small and medium scale events.

Armed with a synthesiser, he would play any type of music and he is also open to the idea of bringing along a recording artiste or popular singer upon request of the organiser.

“I am trying a new concept by utilising the musical skills gifted to me. I can get an established singer to perform with me although usually the invited guests or attendees can join me to sing a few songs as is common at dinners and parties,” he said.

He added that music is a good medium to unite the people, and everybody needs music and entertainment as a way to relax and express their creativity.

Those interested in engaging the services of Simple Play can contact Isa at 013-8266081.
