SIBU: Local demand for essential items for the Lunar New Year celebration is expected to soar, but the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) yesterday said the supply of these items would remain sufficient.
The ministry’s Sibu branch chief Balraj Singh said as part of their early preparations to ensure supply of essential items are not disrupted, the ministry have met with the major players here.
He said major suppliers, wholesalers and retailers had assured his office of adequate supply.
“Our enforcement officers are inspecting the market to prevent errant traders from hiking prices of goods at their whim and fancy,” he pointed out.
Asked on the Christmas Price Control Scheme from Dec 23 till 27 last year, he said: “We appreciate that the traders had worked closely with the ministry and priced the gazetted items according to the stipulated prices.”
