MIRI: Police here and Bukit Aman’s Anti-Vice, Gambling and Gangsterism Division (D7) arrested 48 suspects during raids on suspected online gambling dens in three locations on New Year’s Eve.
All the suspects — 19 workers aged 14 to 42 and 29 customers aged between 20 and 39 — were remanded for four days from yesterday.
Police also confiscated 312 computers, 23 modems and RM11,367 from 11 premises in Bandar Baru Permyjaya, Desa Pujut and Desa Indah during the raids which ran from 6pm to around 11.30pm.
Miri police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong told a press conference yesterday that the operation was the biggest for 2013.
“We are committed to crippling such activities and those errant people who intend to set up such businesses within commercial buildings or houses will face the music,” he said yesterday.
This was the second joint operation by Miri police and Bukit Aman’s D7 for the year.
The seized exhibits have been brought to the Miri Central police station and the case is being investigated under Section 4B (a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1963 and Section 6(1) of the Open Gaming House Act 1953.
