SIBU: Sibu police are targeting a 15 per cent drop in the crime rate this year.

Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi said Sibu recorded an average of five crime cases a day last year.

“One of the ways to attain this is to increase our patrols,” he told a dialogue session with Democratic Action Party (DAP) elected representatives and leaders yesterday.

He said police here have four moving patrol vehicle (MPV) units constantly on the move.

“Through this, we can act fast when a crime happens,” he said, adding that they have recorded several successes through this system.

With Chinese New Year approaching, he said patrols would be intensified.

He added that some 20 new CCTV cameras would be installed in the central business district this year.

“Currently, we have 52 units in town operating round-the-clock,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pelawan assemblyman David Wong said his party would help look for funds for more CCTV cameras.

“This is to make sure police have the tools to reduce crime,” he said.

ASP Yeoh Chun Shyan said police carried out 596 raids on gambling outlets last year of which 44 led to successful seizures of 240 computers.

He said police would work to curb illegal gambling and focus on outlets operating without a licence this year.

“We are working with Sibu Municipal Council in weeding out illegal gambling,” he said.

Mohd Kamal added that clamping down on cyber gambling required time.

“We need the public to give us information,” he said.

Among those present were Lanang MP Alice Lau and Sibu MP Oscar Ling.
