BINTULU: Native Customary Rights (NCR) New Initiative perimeter surveys have been completed in two areas in the Tatau District – Kelebu and Senunok.

Assistant Minister of Local Government Datuk John Sikie Tayai said the Land and Survey Department is currently doing perimeter surveys in the Penyarai area, with more areas to be covered in stages.

“We have informed all longhouse chiefs to give the complete list of NCR landowners to the Land and Survey Department for further action.

“The Prime Minister has allocated another RM50 million for the NCR perimeter survey in Sarawak for next year and this will be implemented until 2015,” Sikie said adding that landowners should grab the opportunity to ensure their NCR land is surveyed.

He pointed out that it would be easier for NCR land to be included in the government’s development programmes if it has been surveyed.

Those who refused to support the NCR new initiative would lose out as the perimeter survey would only be carried out until 2015, after which the focus would be on individual surveys, he said.

“That is why we continue to inform and encourage the local community to participate in the programme. We try our best not to let the people be persuaded by the irresponsible non-governmental organisations, which instigate them to go against the government,” he told a press conference after closing a grassroots leadership transformation seminar on Tuesday.

A total of 89 community leaders from Tatau District took part in the two-day seminar where six working papers were presented.

“We hope with such a seminar, the community leaders who were taking part in the programme would be able to gain more knowledge to have a leadership transformation,” he said.

He reminded local community leaders to fulfil their roles and responsibilities to the fullest as essential agents of development for their respective areas.

The Kakus assemblyman added that community leaders must know all the government’s development programmes in order to be effective.
