KUCHING: The list of councillors for the new term effective Jan 1 next year is not finalised yet, said Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
Met at a function here yesterday, he said the new list would be unveiled as soon as it was finalized and gazetted.
On Dec 12, Wong told a news conference that at least 30 per cent of the councillors, including mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and deputy chairmen, would be new faces.
He, however, could not give the exact figure for newcomers.
Wong also told the press that the state cabinet had authorised a small committee to finalise the list, which would be revealed on Dec 20 or later.
In the coming term, 120 extra councillors would be appointed following an amendment of the Local Authority Ordinance 1996, which was passed by the State Legislative Assembly last month.
The august House endorsed the amendment to increase the number of councillors from 25 to 30.
Effective Jan 1, 2014, each of the 24 city and local councils will have 32 councillors, including mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and deputy chairmen.
The only two city councils in Sarawak are Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Miri City Council (MCC).
