MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS), a renowned Chinese independent school in Miri, has once again proven its unique curriculum’s worth.
Its students study only one set of RRSS syllabus but are adequately prepared to sit for three different Form 3 examinations, namely PMR (Penilaian Menengah Rendah), Junior Science, Mathematics and English (JSME) and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) examinations; and to excel in all three.
This year, nearly 100 per cent of all its 266 students who sat for the three examinations passed well, with more than half scoring at least 5As.
Altogether, there were 61 students scoring at least 5As in UEC and 40 students either scored 7As or 8As in PMR and JSME.
Among the top scorers are Yong Ping Ping, (15), who achieved 18As (eight for PMR, seven for UEC and three for JSME).
The CEO of the school, Datuk Dr Fong Onn Min, said Yong Ping Ping is also a state badminton player, an athlete (long distance runner) and a school prefect. She was voted a model student this year.
He added that another student worthy of mention is Ling Kung Ee (14), a Form 2 student, who, with the encouragement of her mother and the school, sat for PMR before it goes into history after this year, and scored straight As in all the 8 subjects she took.
“Ling Kung Ee has created a new school record in the PMR history for all the Chinese independent schools in the country,” said Dr Fong.
He added that the result of the school has improved tremendously over the past few years and he is convinced that the school will achieve its aim of becoming the top school in this region.
