State achieves best overall results in Form 3 public exam since 1997, improvement in both urban, rural schools
KUCHING: The overall results of the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) obtained by schools in the state are the best in 17 years.
Announcing the results at the State Education office here yesterday State Education director Datu Abdillah Adam revealed that out of 37,375 candidates from national secondary schools (SMK) who sat for the public examination in the state, 69.76 per cent or 26,072 obtained a minimum D in all subjects making it the best achievement since 1997.
“PMR results showed an improvement in all three aspects namely State Average Grade (GPN), achieving Grade A in all subjects and securing minimum D in all subjects,” he said.
Abdullah also noted that there was a slight increase of 0.05 per cent of students scoring straight As in the state with a total of 1,729 students obtaining Grade A in all the subjects out of the 37,375 candidates.
“This year’s percentage has increased from 4.58 per cent last year to 4.63 per cent this year.”
However, Abdillah pointed out that if the achievement of candidates were based on urban and rural areas in terms of GPN, both showed a decrease where the GPN of urban candidates fell by 0.02 from 2.70 last year to 2.68 (2013) whereas the GPN for rural candidates fell 0.07 from 3.05 (2012) to 2.98 this year.
“For the minimum of D in all subjects, the urban school candidates showed an increase of 0.99 per cent from 73.37 per cent (2012) to 74.36 per cent in 2013.
“The same goes to rural school candidates who showed an improvement of 3.88 per cent from 62.8 per cent in 2012 to 66.68 per cent this year,” he said.
For the achievement of As in all subjects, the achievement from urban school candidates were almost similar at 7.50 per cent (2012) and 7.48 per cent (2013) while rural school candidates showed an increase of 0.19 per cent from 2.53 per cent (2012) to 2.72 per cent (2013).
On the performance of subjects, Abdillah said that there was an overall improvement from 12 out of the 14 subjects from this year’s PMR as compared with last year.
Meanwhile, Abdillah also disclosed that 10 schools achieved 100 per cent in securing minimum D for all subjects namely SM Sains Kuching, SM Sains Miri, Sekolah Seni Kuching, Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Kuching, Maktab Rendah Sains Betong, Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Mukah, SM Lodge, SM Tunku Putra, Kolej Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah, and Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, Miri.
A total of 38,324 candidates in Sarawak sat for the PMR examination of which 37,375 (97.52 per cent) were SMK candidates while 925 (2.41 per cent) were private school candidates and 24 (0.07 per cent) were independent candidates.
