SIBU: SMK St Elizabeth has come up the top school in Sibu and the fourth in the state in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam in the aspect of average school grade (GPS) score.

The school scored 2.80 in GPS, an increase of 0.24 compared with her previous year’s score of 3.04.

The result was a pleasant surprise to principal Clement Chieng who said: Getting a GPS of 2.80 is not easy. In fact, we expected we could break through 3.0.

“2.80 is really an achievement. We are all very happy with it.”

“Our average grade is A- and B+,” he added.

Out of 218 students who sat for the exam last year, the school produced 31 top scorers (those obtained A+, A, A-).

The school’s pass rate was 98.62 per cent.

Chieng said such an achievement could not be obtained without the commitment of the teachers.

He said while the students showed lots of discipline, the teachers made great effort to help the students, particularly those weak in certain subjects.

“Many teachers had gone to the extent of teaching their students on a one-to-one basis,” he enthused.

In terms of co-curricular activities, he said the school had done pretty well.

“Our students are not only good in their study but in sports and games as well,” he said.

Chieng thanked God for the blessings showered on the school, saying SMK St Elizabeth being a mission school could not be what it was today without the blessing of God.

He believed the sterling performance could be maintained saying: “I think Form 5 students this year could do better than those of last year. I have confidence in them.”

Three of the top scorers from the school, Crystal Ling, Charlene Pa and Lee Jing Jing said they hoped to get scholarships to further their studies.

Crystal obtained 8A+ and 1A-, Charlene 9A+ and 1A-, while Jing Jing 9A+, 1A and 1A-.

Crystal is very active in Taekwando, English Club, and indoor games.

Charlene’s ambition is to be a dietician. She said she had the support of her pharmacist mother.

She was the deputy president of the school’s Hi-Y club.

Jing Jing, meanwhile, said her love of reading had helped her tremendously in her study.

“I’ve never been to tuition. I believe in time management,” she said, adding that she planned to study Accounting.

SMK Methodist produced four students with straight 10A+. They were Daryl Tan, Janet Lo, Kho Hou Yong and Kimberley Chew.

The school achieved a 93.7 per cent pass with GPS of 3.23 which was a slight decrease compared to the previous year’s 3.0.

Brandon Wong was the only candidate of SMK Sacred Heart to score straight 10A+.

The school obtained GPS of 3.80.
