KUCHING: Joana Sinang attributes her excellent results in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam to just one simple factor; that is paying full attention in class.
She scored straights A’s in all her nine subjects, including three A minus. She is the only SPM candidate from SMK Wira Penrissen who scored straight A’s.
She said she did not have a fixed timetable to do her revision because she believes that if one is focussed in class and studies regularly, one would understand the subjects well.
“I did not have a proper timetable. I just focussed in class and I went to tuitions regularly. I also did revision at least two hours daily.
“I started to prepare myself for the examination early last year,” said the Science Stream student.
Joana, whose father is a veterinarian and mother an assistant auditor, said her favourite subject is Chemistry. She also loved choral speaking and she took part in a state-level English debate competition in 2012, in which she was the first runner-up.
“My ambition is to be an engineer,” she added.
Another top scorer Vellrinna Ajis, who achieved seven A’s and two B’s, said she did her study and revision two hours every night as preparation for the examination.
As she was also active in school activities, she said she had a fixed a timetable for herself.
“Every night, after I finished my homework, I would do my revision for two hours. My favourite subjects are Bahasa Malaysia and Biology, and I managed to score As in both.
“I also took part in school badminton club and English club,” she said. At first, she thought she would only score five to six A’s, she said, adding she was surprised she managed to achieve a better result than she expected.
She said she has not decided which university to go to yet but she is hoping to pursue her study locally.
Other top scorers include Jimmy Mijum who achieved six A’s and three B’s, Gibson Kelit Peter Libu (6A’s, 3B’s), Olivia Mas John (4A’s, 5B’s), Muhammad Syafiq Hassam (5A’s, 3B’s, and 1C), and Mohd Amirul Irfan Zaini (3A’s,5B’s and 1C).
A total of 264 candidates from the school sat for the SPM exam last year.
