MUKAH: The federal government has promised to rebuild SK Tellian and build a new secondary school in Balingian sub-district, said Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
With this, the wishes of the local community to have the new schools seem to have been fulfilled.
The Borneo Post went on ground and in its recent report highlighted the list of seven wishes of the local community, with SK Tellian and a secondary school in Balingian sub-district topping the list.
“The government is very concerned about the future of the people. One way to eradicate poverty in the rural areas is through education and because of that, the government promises to give a new school facility to Kpg Tellian village folk as well as the people of Balingian sub-district,” he said at the official opening of Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Mukah here yesterday.
Muhyiddin, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, also promised better future for Balingian constituency especially for Mukah Town if BN candidate Yussibnosh Balo retains the seat.
Apart from the schools, Muhyiddin also made five other promises which included more job opportunities in Mukah, setting up of more factories, setting up of more small and medium industries to improve the income of the people, better infrastructure and more institutions such as education facilities and community-based facilities.
“This by-election is very significant to continue the legacy left behind by former Balingian assemblyman who was also former chief minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is now the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, who has been instrumental in making Sarawak a modern state,” said Muhyiddin.
Earlier, Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem emphasised that students ought to be ambitious to succeed in life.
He said they must also have a sense of purpose and direction like the role models of the college, namely Sukarno the late president of Indonesia, Albert Einstein, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, US civil rights icon Martin Luther King and former South Africa president Nelson Mandela.
“We must have a purpose in life. I give you my own example. When Tun Rahman was the chief minister of Sarawak, I also wanted to be like him. And now you are looking at him,” said Adenan who received a large applause from the floor.
Meanwhile, Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said since the college was opened in 2010, it has been able to receive an intake of 533 students with an excellent passing rate of 95 per cent annually.
“If students from other schools in other parts of the country can do well, I believe Sarawak students can easily excel,” said Apdal.
Among those present were Adenan’s wife Dato Jamilah Anu, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and BN candidate Yussibnosh Balo.
