KUCHING: A week after Angkatan Zaman Mansang’s #ayckickstart 2014 event at One Hotel Santubong, participants and Azam Sarawak officers are still feeling the buzz.

The weekend camp for Azam Young Souls Volunteers under their ‘Young Souls of the City’ programme was a success, with more than their targeted figure of 100 youths vying for a slot in the programme.

Recounting their weekend during a radio interview at Sarawak FM yesterday, Azam Sarawak Communication Officer Kerry Edison said that they were inundated with phone calls from youths who were interested to join.

“We at Azam promoted it non-stop and the youths themselves were updating about it on the social media, which could account for the overwhelming response we received,” he told the radio show host DJ Uji Morna.

Afizrenna Mohamed, a #ayckickstart participant, cannot forget a video shown during the session ‘Mirror mirror on the Wall’ by facilitator Md Ariff Irwani Azahari, who was Azam Sarawak’s Youth Development chairman.

“It was touching and made us all cry. We learned many new things,” she said.

“The programme was an opportunity for us to find role models made up of people who have been involved in volunteerism.”

Fellow participant Mohd Nazrie Salasian, said that it was enlightening to learn the culture of people in the state after spending some time in his native Sabah and in Peninsular Malaysia.

“I liked the motivational talk called ‘Treading the Clash of Generations’ by Syed Nizamuddin Syed Kassim, an administrative and diplomatic officer based in KL,” Nazrie said, adding that the speaker was young like them.

“He talked about youths who can face their working life (successfully) and communicate with more senior staff and make it work. There is no need to be scared. His talk increased our confidence.”

Azam Community Development Officer Cynthia Sim said, “We will always meet at Azam Youth Central (AYC) to plan activities such as ‘Live at Wayang Street’.”

“The youths will never be left just like that because Azam will always help steer them in the process of development in Sarawak.”
