SIBU: Malaysia was the top trading partner of China last year in East Asia, with total trade volume amounting to US$100 billion while the Asian economic power envisions greater investment in East Malaysia.
Stating this, Chinese Consul General in Kuching Liu Quan said Malaysia would continue to be the top trading partner for China in the next five years.
In his address as guest-of-honour during the celebration dinner of the 40th year of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China cum 20th anniversary of Chinese Consulate in Kuching hosted by Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) on Friday evening, he said China’s investment in Malaysia would see greater investment in East Malaysia for the next five years with the total amount to reach US$500 billion.
Liu also urged the entrepreneurs of both countries to grab the opportunity to invest in their respective countries.
He said both countries have much in common such as in education and cultural fields which augured well in areas of investment.
According to him, the Malaysian government has bought two of China’s panda and which would arrive in Malaysia by April.
Touching on Sibu’s development, Liu said much development has taken place over the past 10 decades.
Earlier, SCCCI president Hu Yu Siong, in his speech, said China’s emerging economic power had helped Asian countries in the economic sector.
He said the good diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia had benefited both countries.
He hoped such ties would be further strengthened in future in a win-win situation for both countries.
Sibu Chinese community paramount leader, Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming, chairman of Sibu Municipal Council Datuk Tiong Thai King and Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee were among those present.
