MIRI: Miri is interested to work together with Brunei to promote and develop tourism in the city and the sultanate.
The proposal to form the collaboration was made by Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin during an unofficial meeting with the tourism minister from Brunei in Kuching recently.
“It (the proposal) received positive response from the minister and we likely will organise a meeting with tourism industry players and the ministries from both Sarawak, particularly from Miri and Brunei soon,” said Lee, adding that the meeting would be held in Miri.
Among the areas of collaboration proposed are tour packages for places of interest in both Miri and Brunei.
“Selling and promoting places of interest in one package would make their tour to this region worthwhile and worth their money. Brunei would be additional attraction and an extended destination for tourists coming to Miri and likewise for tourists in Brunei coming to Miri,” Lee told The Borneo Post.
Thus, he urged industry players and those from the service sector here to look out for possibilities of working together and come up with tour packages.
“Miri and Brunei which are close to each other would be attractive destinations to tourists coming to both Miri and Brunei. Not only will they be able to visit two countries in a single trip but it is also cost saving,” said Lee.
Apart from coming up with tour packages, Lee also urged them to promote and create awareness of both destinations.
On their part, he said the two governments would look into the possibility of reducing red tape such as by issuing visas on arrival to tourists coming to both destinations, and also help out in the promotion of destinations and tour packages.
