SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has divided areas under its jurisdiction into 30 zones, with a councillor assigned to head each zone.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the zoning system was adopted to better serve the people.

“Councillors of the respective zones are to report to the council issues or problems the people are encountering.

“I’ve also asked the councillors to have at least two dialogue sessions with the residents in their respective zones every year,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Tiong said some minor issues could be resolved quickly, but the council may have to prioritise on those issues that required big funding. His deputy Dato Andrew Wong, meanwhile, said the council had only 32 councillors, including himself and the chairman, and they could not possibly go everywhere in a single group.

He said the zone system could enable the council to get closer to every facet of the society.

Wong also called for cooperation from the public in creating a better and cleaner Sibu.

“Some problems such as refuse collection could be promptly resolved. We’ve already asked the contractors to clean up the areas that needed to be cleaned up by Feb 24,” he said.

Wong said members of the public having complaints may direct them to the councillors in charge of the respective zones.
