MIRI: This year was indeed a joyous Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration not only for the Chinese community in Long Lama, Baram, but also the Orang Ulu there when Head of State, Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Salahuddin Abang Barieng visited them for the first time yesterday.
For local Chinese community leader Penghulu Desmond Yap, this year’s CNY meant a lot as the Salahuddin was willing to extend his CNY visit to the Chinese community who live in the interiors.
“Since the establishment of this small town of Long Lama over 100 years ago, this is his first visit here.
“We are indeed grateful and honoured as His Excellency is willing to fly all the way from Miri to visit us here for this year’s Chinese New Year,” he said when met at Long Lama yesterday.
According to Penghulu Desmond, their preparation to welcome the entourage was simple as they were only informed of Salahuddin’s visit on the very last minute. He, however, was pleased as the visit went well.
“We hope, if possible, His Excellency and other leaders will come visit us in Long Lama again,” he said.

Lawai Epoi said Salahuddin’s visit was historic as many of them had looked forward to seeing him visiting the rural residents there.
He said the people were touched by Salahuddin’s charisma as he is people friendly.
“We love him because of his friendliness when meeting the people,” he said.
Among those accompanying Salahuddin were Assistant Minister of Resource Planning Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Baram MP Anyi Ngau, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, political secretary to the Chief Minister Robert Laing, Miri deputy resident Abdul Aziz Yusuf and other community leaders.
