KUCHING: Malaysia Cultural Performance Activists Association (MCPAA) will be holding a Chinese New Year dinner at Thian Court at Crown Square, Jalan Pending on February 17.

While the aim of the dinner is to raise funds for the association’s activities, association chairman Osbert Cho said they had also invited various charity homes and organisations to the function.

“We want to spread the joy of the celebration to the less fortunate. We want to reflect a caring society and that the less fortunate and less privileged are not forgotten during the special occasion,” he said.

More than 150 residents of Rumah Seri Kenangan old folks’ home, Salvation Army Children’s Home, Salvation Army Boys’ Home, Sarawak Society for the Deaf, Sarawak Children Cancer Society, Kuching Green Ribbon Association, Home of Peace and Sarawak Cheshire Home will attend the dinner.

Cho expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all those who had sponsored the charity homes and organisations to the dinner and ‘angpows’.

“We appreciate and thank those who give their sponsorships. We also thank those who support and sponsor our dinner,” he said.

MCPAA’s objectives include promoting multiracial culture as well as local talent.

At the moment, most of its members are Chinese, and Cho hopes to recruit more people from the non-Chinese community like the Melanaus, Ibans, Bidayuhs and Malays as members.

According to him, the association was set up in 2010 but was not active until recently when the association held an election and formed a committee to reactivate the association and pursue its objectives.

“We aim to pursue its objective of providing a platform for multicultural fellowship programmes and promoting our multiracial and cultural society to national level and hopefully international level.”

Its other objectives are to promote local novel production to showcase local writers of any race, and to pursue local theatre performance to provide a platform to those who are talented in acting or singing or others, regardless of their race and age.

“We are also aiming to produce local movies played by local actors and actresses.

“All these are to promote our local talents. We want to develop people’s talent and promote them,” he added.

He also said the association aimed to do more charity events in the near future to contribute back to the society.
