CM, entourage pay CNY visits to several dignitaries

SIBU: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib arrived in Sibu yesterday for their Chinese New Year (CNY) visits to several Chinese dignitaries here.

They were accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, Minister of Special Functions Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem and political secretary to the chief minister Abu Seman Jahwie.

The couple first visited Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh at his residence in Ipoh Road for lunch.

On their arrival there, the couple were met by Soon Koh, his wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong, his son Datuk Andrew Wong and his wife Datin Lily Toh and other family members.

A lion dance was performed to honour the arrival of the special guests according to Chinese tradition.

Assistant Public Health Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee, Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee and KTS Group of Companies managing director Dato Henry Lau were among those joining the lunch.

Taib and Ragad later had dinner with RH Group chairman Tan Sri Datuk Sir Tiong Hiew King at his residence in Brooke Drive here.

Today, they will be visiting Datuk Tiong Thai King at his residence in Tun Abang Haji Openg Road at 10am before going to Hock Peng Organisation managing director Datuk Toh Chiew Hock’s residence in Upper Lanang Road and the residence of Dato Henry Lau in Tun Abang Haji Openg Road.

At 2pm, Taib will grace the pre-opening of University College Technology Sarawak at its campus in Old Airport Road.

Later at 8pm, Taib and Ragad will attend a gathering organised by United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu Division at a hotel here.
