MIRI: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) here yesterday ran a routine inspection on buses at Pujut Corner Bus Terminal here to ensure the buses are safe for travel during the Chinese New Year holidays.

Its chief, Kenneth Umpau, said yesterday the inspection is part of their regular routine during the festive season.

“We inspect their tyres, brakes, driver’s licence and most importantly our goal is to ensure that the buses are safe for travel and take passengers to their destinations,” he said.

The department had inspected about 50 buses daily since the start of the yearly programme onJan 24. The department is also monitoring the bus fares during the festive season.

“We do not want any bus operators to simply increase their bus fares especially during festive seasons,” he explained.

Sixteen JPJ officers were involved in the inspection which will end on Feb 9.
