KUCHING: Batu Kawah assemblywoman Christina Chew yesterday urged Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to repair the stretch of road beneath the Chong Kiun Kong bridge that connects Rantau Panjang and the old Batu Kawah bazaar.

“After heavy rain and due to poor drainage, the road is in bad condition with many potholes. That road is also totally dark at night because there is no street lighting there. All these invite danger and risk of accident,” she told a press conference at the DAP headquarters here recently.

She thus urged MPP and other relevant authorities to take action soonest as possible to fix the road before any untoward incident happens. She said the road needed to be sealed properly apart from needing a proper drainage system.

She said the problem had existed for the past six months and MPP had asked Road Transport Department (JKR) to repair the road.

“During the last State Legislative Assembly sitting, it was said JKR had approved the application and the project would start this month. It is coming to the end of January yet nothing has been done,” she lamented.

She also said she was told by a JKR officer that the department had not received any financial allocation for the project.

“We can’t let the people suffer like that by saying no funds. It is under MPP’s jurisdiction. I hope they would be responsible and come up with at least a temporary solution while waiting for the funds.

“I also urge JKR to sort things out as soon as possible and confirm when to do it but not just keep the people waiting with no sound,” she stressed.

Meanwhile, she called upon BR1M 3.0 new applicants to submit their application forms by Jan 24 to DAP Service Centre for them to process the documents.

“We need time to process them. Those without bank account do not need to open a new account to apply for it. They would still get the voucher if their applications are approved,” she said.

According to her, many were confused and had called her asking whether they needed to fill up the account number space.

She said she had checked with Inland Revenue Board (IRB), who confirmed that the account number was not necessary if applicants did not have any bank account. And previous successful applicants just need to go to IRB website to update their information, she added.

DAP is giving away calendars printed with their representatives’ phone number to their supporters whom they meet at public places.

Those interested can also come to collect them from any DAP service centre throughout Sarawak.
