Federation accepting new lion dance trainees

CULTURAL HERITAGE: A lion dance troupe in action.

KUCHING: The Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak is accepting new lion dance trainees.

Training will be at No. 251-252, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kuching (next to Sarawak Plaza above Maybank) on Fridays from 7.15pm to 8.45pm, and the Federation’s Centre of Excellence, Lorong 3, Kali Garden, Jalan Resak every Thursday and Friday from 5pm to 6.30pm.It is open to all irrespective of race, gender or religion.

Lion dance is a special art of performance in the physical culture activities of Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak.

The federation’s lion dance team was the 1987 Malaysia Airlines Golden Lion Dance Festival (Sarawak level) finalist and also 1988 Malaysia Airlines Golden Lion Dance Festival (national level) runner-up.

In the International Dragon and Lion Dance Festival, the federation’s lion dance team won the Outstanding Performance Award in 1997, Excellence Performance Award (1998) and Golden Lion Awards (2004, 2006 and 2008), while the dragon dance team won the Golden Dragon Award in 2004, 2006 and 2008.

To promote dragon and lion dance, the federation has incorporated the Dragon and Lion Dance Festival to the annual Nanyang Wushu Festival and also the biennial International Nanyang Wushu Dragon and Lion Dance Festival since 1997.The federation performs for occasions such as festivals, opening ceremonies, annual dinners, launching ceremonies, birthdays celebrations, anniversaries, and house-warmings.

Enrolment can be done at the federation’s headquarters on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 7pm to 8.30pm and on Sundays from 4.30pm to 7pm.
