Fadillah greets online job applicants at the roadshow.

KUCHING: Job seekers should equip themselves with marketable skills in order to be ready to hold positions in the civil service.

In pointing this out, Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusuf said serving as a government servant now demands higher knowledge and skills as expectation by members of the public towards the civil service is increasing.

“In order for the country to progress, the public service sector must be upgraded and this starts right down from its staff,” said Fadillah.

He added that job applicants should realise that scoring A’s in exam, possessing a degree or master’s is not enough as job applicants need soft skills to be hired for a job.

Fadillah was speaking at the Public Service Commission (PSC) Career Roadshow at Stadium Perpaduan here yesterday.

“Thinking skills, marketing skills and the ability to solve problems in various situations is an added advantage to an individual apart from certificate you possessed.

“With that in mind, the public service sector can be transformed into a world class service provider,” said Fadillah.

He added that the state government is committed to work with the federal side to ensure the state public service sector is performing and urged applicants to prepare themselves with the necessary skills.

On another matter, Fadillah revealed that a total of 14,731 job applicants from the state had submitted their application to PSC last year and a total of 4,235 from the total number were hired to work with the public service sector. He also lauded the effort by PSC to choose Kuching as its first destination this year to hold such roadshow.

“The event as a great opportunity for job applicants to learn of various job opportunities with the government,” he said.

Meanwhile,PSC deputy chairman Datuk Segarajah Ratnalingam said the state PSC had organised 23 outreach programmes especially in remote areas across Sarawak where the locals can apply for jobs available offline.

“All these efforts were part of PSC’s transformation effort to be a reliable and performing government agency,” he added.

PSC, according to him will hold a seminar on Jan 19 at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar where interested job applicants can come to learn tips in order to be recruited into the civil service.

Twenty-seven government departments and agencies such as Labour Department, Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives Ministry, and Education Service Commission participated in the event which will end today (Jan 12).
